Rebrand for the 1984 video game classic Elite.

Personal Project

Elite is a space trading and combat video game originally published for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers in September 1984.

Written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell, Elite was one of the first home computer games to use 3D graphics, which were used render the eight galaxies with a combined two thousand planets, which comprised Elite’s universe. Paired with deep trading and piracy systems, players could weigh up the risks, rewards, and their own personal style to progess through the galaxies.
The game proved highly influential upon gaming as a whole. This project aims to provide a fresh way to discover and learn about this classic video game by presenting information about the game in an inviting, accessible and sexy form.

This animation displays the Doppler effect, a physical phenomonon where a change in the wavelength of light (or change in frequency of a wave) as a source of light moves towards or away from an observer. For example, the different sound a siren makes when a vehicle is approching and moving away from an observer. In visible light, this effect is seen as a red or blue ‘shift.
The doppler effect is used in this design to emphasize the players journey, and difference in perspective while on their journey.

Distinctive digital resource serve as a enticing entrypoint and user manual.

The different characteristics of the available ships are displayed in the detail pages. The ‘Cobra Mk III’ is light, fast, and a jack of all trades vessel. While the ‘Fer-de-Lance’ is a large, heavy, expensive and oppulant ship often used by ‘well-heeled bounty hunters and freewheeling corporations.
